Three different groups run Christmas in the Village of Arroyo Grande. The City's recreation staff runs the markets, the parade and the tree lighting. A volunteer nonprofit puts Santa in the Heritage House gardens and hosts Elegant Evening. A guild of Village business owners formed this year to promote the storefronts in between. Each group posts its dates in a different place. Put the lists side by side and the season comes together twice, over the December 5–6 weekend and on Sunday, December 13. Those are the dates to plan around.
Three organizers, three websites
The City of Arroyo Grande announced its fall and holiday lineup in a September 3, 2026 news release. It covers the Big Ditch Market, the Turkey Trot and the City's recreation calendar. The City also runs the Holiday Parade and Jingle Bell Dash and the Tree Lighting and Snow event. Visit SLO CAL lists both.
The second calendar belongs to the volunteers at Christmas in the Village. Their site describes the work this way:
"Our passion is to help create a Christmas Spectacular in the historic Village of Arroyo Grande. Our organization of volunteers also hosts Elegant Evening in the Village as well as transforming the Historical Society's Heritage House and Gardens into a magical Santa's Village."
The same page calls the effort an "over thirty-five years tradition" and invites sponsors and donations to keep it going.
The third group is the newest. KSBY reported in March that five women who own Village businesses started the Arroyo Grande Village Merchant Guild to promote shops in the Village. Their conversations began in October 2025, and the Guild became a nonprofit in January 2026. This is the Guild's first holiday season as a formal organization.

Before the holidays start, November has two dates. Both fall on Sundays and both come from the City.
November: a footrace and a market
The Turkey Trot comes first. The City's release puts the 49th annual race on Sunday, November 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. on the Arroyo Grande High School track. It's open to children from preschool through eighth grade. Registration costs $5 and includes a Turkey Trot T-shirt and refreshments after the race. Prizes for first, second and third place are a turkey, a chicken and a game hen. You can sign up in advance at arroyogrande.org/rec or at the track starting at 1 p.m.
Two weeks later, the Big Ditch Market comes back for one more day. Its September 4 and October 2 markets ran on Friday evenings from 4 to 8 p.m. The holiday edition on Sunday, November 29, runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Car Corral. Visit SLO CAL's listing gives the address as 103 E. Branch St. and lists the event as free. Some of that listing's description still covers the Friday evening markets, so go by the City's daytime hours. The City describes the Big Ditch format as local artisans, food trucks and live music. This is the season's first market, six days before the City's second one on December 5.
December 5 and 6: the weekend the calendars stack up
The first Saturday in December has the most going on, and one group's event leads straight into another's.
Saturday morning and early afternoon. The City's Art in the Park Holiday Market fills Heritage Square Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. At the same time, Santa is in the Heritage House gardens at 126 S. Mason St. for his Saturday hours, 1 to 4 p.m. Both run through the early afternoon, so you can do the market and the Santa visit on the same trip without coming back to the Village.
Saturday evening. Elegant Evening is the volunteers' signature night. Their site calls it a free tradition with holiday shopping, local food, live music and spirits. Christmas lights and decorations line the Village, and festive attire is welcome but not required. Santa comes as a special guest. The organizers' own Elegant Evening page still lists the date as TBA with hours of 5 to 8 p.m. The Gallery's event listing at 213 E. Branch St. puts it on Saturday, December 5, from 5 to 8 p.m., with "Christmas lights and late night shopping in Arroyo Grande!" Treat December 5 as the likely date and check the organizers' page as the weekend gets closer.
If that date holds, Saturday runs from the market's 10 a.m. opening to Elegant Evening's 8 p.m. close. Santa has a role in both halves of the day.
Sunday late afternoon. The City's Jingle Bell Dash starts at 4 p.m. and the Holiday Parade follows at 5. The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Village. The City's parade page from the 2025 event described a route that starts on East Branch Street beside City Hall and continues along Traffic Way and Branch Street. Treat that as the typical route, and check the City's 2026 details before planning around a particular curb. Santa's Sunday hours at Heritage Gardens, 1 to 4 p.m., end just as the dash begins. A family could visit Santa and then watch the dash and parade without a break in between.
The quieter weekdays in between
Santa's Village is open on more days than any other event this season. From Tuesday, December 1, through Tuesday, December 22, Santa sits at Heritage House and Gardens on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. and on weekends from 1 to 4 p.m. The weekday hours start at 3 p.m. and the weekend hours run into the middle of the afternoon, so weekdays are the easier choice for anyone who wants to avoid the stacked weekends. The volunteers also warn about weather on their site: "We encourage you to come early in December to avoid raining day cancellations." Families waiting for the last week before Christmas are taking a chance on the forecast.
The Heritage House location matters too. The gardens belong to the Historical Society, and the volunteer group turns them into Santa's Village each year.
December 13: one afternoon, two parks
The second overlap comes a week later, and this time the events are in different places. That changes how you plan the day.
Santa's Palo Mesa Pizza Party is from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 13, at the Historical Society's Heritage Gardens, 126 S. Mason St. Donations are suggested but not required. Santa's regular Sunday hours, 1 to 4 p.m., cover the same window.
That evening, the City moves its celebration to Elm Street Park for Tree Lighting and Snow, from 5 to 7 p.m. Visit SLO CAL lists snow play, vendors, music, free s'mores and carriage rides. Santa lights the tree.
That leaves about three hours between the end of the pizza party and the tree lighting. For dinner in that gap, La Pizca Cuisine opened this February at 1412 E. Grand Ave. It serves Modern Latin food from chef Cresencio "Chencho" Villar and is the sister restaurant to his Corazon Cafe. Santa appears at both December 13 events, at Heritage Gardens in the afternoon and at Elm Street Park in the evening, so families can see him twice in one day.
Putting the two calendars on your fridge
The City posts its dates on its news page and takes registrations at arroyogrande.org/rec. The volunteers post Santa's hours and Elegant Evening updates at christmasagvillage.com. The Gallery has already listed Elegant Evening on its own event page. If you plan only around the overlaps, mark the December 5–6 weekend and Sunday, December 13, when events from different groups run back to back.
